Are We There Yet?
Summer always seems like the perfect time to pack suitcases, pack the car, and head out for a little rest and relaxation. Some of us take time off to head to the beach, or a favorite lake community, or the mountains. We just want a few days to read a novel, snooze in the sun, or chill with a cool beverage. We want to leave the stress of work behind us and escape the responsibilities of life. But then it happens…15 minutes into the trip you hear “I’m hungry”. 30 minutes into the trip you hear “I have to go potty”. And 60 minutes into the trip you hear those dreaded words “Are We There Yet?”
This month we thought we’d share a few car game ideas to help keep the family occupied during your travel time.
- The Rainbow Game: Red and Yellow and Pink and Green, Purple and Orange and Blue. I can find a rainbow, find a rainbow. You can too. Start with red and locate something outside the car window that matches each color. Repeat the game 3X.
- Build-a-Story Cards: These cards are easy to pack and fun to play. Pass the cards out and go around and create a story based on the card you received. Enhances listening skills. Imaginations soar! You can grab Build-a-Story Cards here.
- Category A-Z : Choose a topic such as Animals, Food, Names, Cities (based on age range of children in the car). Players take turns going through the alphabet naming something for each letter in that category. i.e. Names: Aly, Bill, Cindy, David… So many fun variations. Be creative!
- Hum a Tune: Players take turns humming a tune and you must guess what song they are humming. You can even pick specific categories such as Christmas in July, or Patriotic Songs.
- Preschool Yoga Cards: And when it is time to take a car break…pull out these fun yoga cards and do a few stretches before you pile back in and head on your way. Perfect for the whole family.
Don’t forget to pack healthy snacks and listen to some calming music on the radio to help encourage napping too. And when they wake and say “Are We There Yet?”, you can say “Yes, Yes We Are”.
Enjoy your trip!
